In Minnesota, the Tests of General Educational Development – commonly known as the GED® tests or simply GED -- provide individuals who do not have a high school diploma the opportunity to earn a State of Minnesota GED Diploma. The five tests in the GED battery (Writing, Reading, Math, Social Studies and Science) measure academic competencies similar to many of those required of a Minnesota high school graduate.

Who May Take the GED Test?

  • Individuals who are not currently enrolled in high school and do not have a high school diploma; and
  • Are at least 19 years of age OR at least 16 years of age and have obtained an Age Waiver;
  • Are Minnesota residents; and
  • Have a valid, current, government-issued, photo ID such as a driver’s license or Minnesota ID card.

There is a fee to take the GED test. The cost for the battery of five (5) tests is $70.00. The fee for test retakes and individual tests is $15.00/test. Fees must be paid in cash prior to an examinee being administered any tests.

Obtaining an Age Waiver

Residents of Minnesota between the ages of 16 and 18 may take the GED tests if they qualify for an Age Waiver. You must apply for an age waiver using the form provided by the Minnesota

GED Office. Approved forms must be presented at an Official Testing Center before you will be allowed to test. Age waiver applicants must not be enrolled in high school. Contact SW ABE -Marshall Region at 507-537-7046 for further information.

Warning Regarding Misleading GED Claims
The State of Minnesota GED Diploma can be neither earned nor obtained via the Internet or through correspondence programs. The Tests of General Educational Development developed by the GED Testing Service® often require extensive preparation and/or the demonstration of a high level of high school knowledge and academic skills. Tests are administered only at official GED Testing Centers under the direction of the Minnesota Department of Education. Any other GED diploma or “high school equivalency certificate” not issued by the Minnesota Department of Education may not be accepted by employers, colleges and universities or the military.
